The Big Story Will Be Africa
in terms of global demography in the twenty-first century…
“Today, there are nearly 700 million Christians in Africa, making it the world’s most Christian continent in terms of population. Indeed, the 10 countries noted above with the fastest-growing Christian populations in the world from 2010 to 2020 are all located in sub-Saharan Africa.”
Over the next 30 years, the populations of more than half of the continent’s 54 countries are set to double or more. This will give African 2.5 billion inhabitants by 2050-equivalent to the population of the world in 1950. At that point it will account for more than a quarter of the global total.” “The most striking consequence of rapid and sustained growth is the “chronic youthfulness,” as one leading demographer has termed it, of the populations of almost all of Africa’s countries. The median age is a little below 20 years old, about 10 years less than in Latin America and Asia and more than 20 years less than in Europe and China.” “ . . . it is already clear that in terms of global demography in the twenty-first century ‘the big story will be Africa’.”
